Although nicole richie grew up in the spotlight as lionel richie’s daughter, she keeps her kids largely out of public view. the former reality star and her husband, joel madden, married since 2010, share two children: harlow, 17, and sparrow, 15. nicole has spoken openly about parenting and the challenges of being a working mom. “it’s difficult sometimes,” she admitted in 2015, noting how important it is to hear other moms acknowledge the juggle. “every family is different … it’s just a constant game of prioritizing.” she appreciates raising kids in an era where moms feel more open discussing their struggles. “women are supporting each other in that space, which is so awesome,” she said in another interview.

Sparrow Madden, 15
Born sept. 9, 2009, sparrow’s name unintentionally matched his sister’s ending in “ow.” nicole revealed her inspiration came from captain jack sparrow, while joel had his own reasons. sparrow’s style mirrors his dad’s rock star vibe—bandanas, sleeveless shirts, and an all-black wardrobe. “he likes to do his own thing,” nicole said, adding that his early outfits even included a little curly mohawk.

Nicole and joel, despite being “polar opposites,” have been together since meeting in 2006. joel described their connection as finding each other at the right moment. “we appreciate the same things,” nicole noted, calling him “very romantic.” after more than a decade of marriage, they remain deeply connected.
