For Al Roker, family is at the heart of everything. The Today weather anchor became a father in 1987 when his eldest daughter, Courtney, was born. He welcomed her with his late ex-wife, Alice Bell, before their divorce in 1994. The following year, Roker married Deborah Roberts, and together they had two children: Leila, born in 1998, and Nick, born in 2002.
Reflecting on fatherhood in 2022, Roker shared how his own father’s influence shaped the way he raised his children. “I tend to put my dad on a bit of a pedestal. He had his faults, but he was always my greatest advocate, and I try to do the same for my kids,” he said.
Now, with all three grown up, Roker has plenty to be proud of. Courtney became a mother in 2023, Nick started college in 2022, and Leila is making her mark in the media industry.
Born in May 1987, Courtney is Roker’s eldest daughter, whom he shares with Alice Bell. She currently works as a test kitchen manager and recipe developer for appliance brands Chefman and CHEF iQ, often showcasing her culinary creations on Instagram.
In April 2020, Courtney got engaged to Wesley Laga, who took the traditional route of asking Roker for his blessing. “He texted me, saying, ‘Can we get together? There’s something I want to talk about,'” Roker recalled on Today. “I had an inkling, and sure enough, he asked for my permission at a favorite neighborhood restaurant.”
Born on November 17, 1998, Leila is Roker’s first child with Deborah Roberts. Raised in New York City, she attended LaGuardia High School before studying journalism and fine arts at the American University of Paris, graduating in 2021.
Now based in Paris, Leila works as a freelance journalist for Today and uses her platform to advocate for social justice. Following the 2020 death of George Floyd, she wrote about the emotional toll of systemic racism. “I wanted to express what my Black friends were feeling and explain to my non-Black friends—this is how we’re hurting,” she shared.
Roker’s youngest child, Nicholas Albert Roker, was born on July 18, 2002. As a baby, he showed signs of developmental delays, and Roker later revealed that Nick is “somewhere on the spectrum and maybe obsessive-compulsive.”
Despite early challenges, Nick has defied expectations. “The obstacles he faced would have tripped up many others, but not Nick,” Roker shared with Guideposts in 2019. “He never got the message that there were limitations.”
Nick, who started college in 2022, is a dedicated athlete, earning a black belt in Taekwondo and winning two gold medals at the Special Olympics New York Summer Games in swimming.
Roker and Roberts met on the set of Today in 1990 and married in 1995. Over the years, they’ve built a strong partnership, even gracing first-ever Love Issue cover in 2021.
“He’s a real romantic,” Roberts shared. “When I travel, I find notes in my suitcase or purse—little messages or even an Emily Dickinson poem. It always touches me.”
From parenting to professional success, Al Roker’s legacy is deeply rooted in the love and support he gives his family.
