Eugene Levy has spent his career making audiences laugh, but his role as a parent wasn’t all about the punchlines. The beloved Canadian actor married screenwriter and producer Deborah Divine in 1977, and they raised their two children, Dan and Sarah, in Toronto, away from the spotlight of Hollywood. Eugene spoke to in 2019 about their decision to keep their family life grounded and less influenced by the entertainment industry. He admitted to being a strict parent, explaining, “The thing was for us, if you crossed the line, there was going to be some sort of punishment. It’s the way I was brought up, and it’s the way I brought up my kids.” He added, “It worked! Because honestly, we’ve never had a problem with our kids. It was fun as they got older because then they’d start making us laugh.”
Making laugh truly became a family business when Eugene, Dan, and Sarah all starred together in the critically acclaimed comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” from 2015 to 2020. On the show, Eugene and Dan played the father-son duo Johnny and David Rose, while Sarah took on the role of Twyla Sands, the local waitress.
Eugene and Deborah welcomed their first child, Daniel Joseph, on August 9, 1983, in Toronto. Despite the fame surrounding his father, Dan had a relatively normal upbringing in Canada. “He made me do my homework. He grounded me,” Dan shared with in 2019. It soon became apparent that Dan not only inherited his father’s distinctive eyebrows and full head of hair but his knack for comedy as well. “There were more times that Daniel had us laughing than I ever had anybody laughing,” Eugene remarked. Dan’s career in front of the camera began in 2006 when he hosted MTV’s “After Show” for “The Hills.” In February 2023, Dan opened up about the homophobia he encountered early in his career, particularly during his time at MTV, on the “Phone a Friend with Jessi Cruickshank” podcast.
Sarah, born on September 10, 1986, in Toronto, grew up with all options open for what she wanted to pursue, as her father noted in 2019. She chose acting, making her on-screen debut alongside her father in “Cheaper by the Dozen 2” in 2005. Her most notable role came as Café Tropical waitress Twyla on “Schitt’s Creek.” Working on the show with her family led to many discussions over the years at the dinner table, Sarah recalled. Since the show’s conclusion in April 2020, Sarah has been active off-screen. On October 16, 2021, she married law student Graham Outerbridge, with her brother Dan DJing at the reception and her parents surprising guests with a duet of Emmylou Harris’s “Love and Happiness.
Eugene Levy and Deborah Divine are among Hollywood’s more discreet and enduring couples. Married since the late 1970s, the pair have raised their son Dan and daughter Sarah in a close-knit environment reminiscent of the Roses on “Schitt’s Creek.” Though often behind the scenes, Deborah garnered her own following through her witty tweets (before deactivating her Twitter account). Her sense of humor is evident in messages like her birthday tweet for Eugene in December 2021: “Love and a very big Happy Birthday to @Realeugenelevy, my ‘getting more handsome every day’ husband. Never thought swatting away women would be part of my retirement plan!” So, who is Deborah Divine? Here’s a closer look at Eugene Levy’s wife and her life away from the spotlight.
