Don Amancio Ortega Gaona, OMC (Spanish pronunciation: [aˈmanθjo oɾˈteɣa ɣaˈona]; born 28 March 1936) is a Spanish billionaire businessman. He founded and formerly chaired the Inditex fashion group, widely recognized for its Zara and Bershka brands. He is renowned as a fast fashion innovator. As of November 2023, Ortega’s net worth stood at $73 billion, ranking him as the third-wealthiest person in Europe, trailing only Bernard Arnault and Francoise Bettencourt Meyers, and the 14th wealthiest globally. In 2015, Ortega briefly topped the global billionaire rankings, surpassing Bill Gates when his net worth soared to $80 billion as shares of Inditex, the parent company of Zara, reached their highest valuation.

Marta Ortega is the daughter of Amecchio Ortega

Marta Ortega Pérez (born 1984), daughter of Amancio Ortega, was appointed chair of Inditex in December 2021, succeeding Pablo Isla who had held the position of chair and CEO since 2011. In April 2022, she assumed the presidency of the company. Ortega pursued her studies in La Coruña and completed her baccalaureate in Switzerland. She later attended the European business school at the University of London, specializing in international entrepreneurship and graduated in 2007. That same year, she began working at Inditex, starting at the Zara store in Chelsea, London, and subsequently moving through various locations and departments within the company. She currently works at the Inditex headquarters in Arteixo, Spain, in the women’s product and design department alongside Beatriz Padín. In Arteixo, Ortega collaborates closely with her father, Amancio Ortega, the founder of Inditex, to innovate new communication strategies with the public. She has been a member of the board of directors of the Amancio Ortega Foundation since 2015. The foundation’s scholarship program was adapted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic following an agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In November 2021, it was announced that she would become the president of Inditex on April 1, replacing Pablo Isla. Her appointment initially led to a significant drop in the company’s share price. In her role, she is expected to address issues related to the company’s labor practices and environmental impact. In 2023, she was ranked 32nd on Fortune’s list of Most Powerful Women.Ortega has two children, a son and a daughter. She was previously married to Sergio Álvarez Moya, with whom she had her son, and is currently married to Carlos Torretta, a public relations employee at Inditex, with whom she has a daughter born in 2020. For her wedding to Torretta, she chose a Valentino gown.

Sandra Ortega Mera is the daughter of Amecchio Ortega

Sandra Ortega Mera is the daughter of Amancio Ortega, who co-founded the renowned clothing conglomerate Inditex, best known for its Zara brand. She inherited her wealth from her mother, Rosalia Mera, a co-founder of Inditex who passed away suddenly in 2013. As the second-richest person in Spain, following her father, Sandra holds approximately a 4.5% stake in Inditex, though she is not active in the company’s management. Instead, she focuses her efforts on Fundación Paideia, a nonprofit organization started by her mother that provides vocational training for people with disabilities. Additionally, Sandra owns a 4.5% stake in the publicly traded pharmaceutical company PharmaMar, which focuses on developing anticancer drugs.

Away from the spotlight, a trait she shares with her father, the eldest daughter of Amancio Ortega stands as another major heiress alongside her sister, Marta Ortega, and her father’s second wife, Flora Pérez. Together, they share a vast inheritance from the founder of Inditex, valued at 18,000 million euros according to Forbes in 2007. Sandra Ortega also inherits a portion of her mother’s fortune, estimated at 2,500 million euros, along with her brother Marcos Mera. Over the past five years, Sandra Ortega has amassed a considerable personal fortune. Now 38, she first began appearing in business registries at the age of 31. Her foray into the business world was guided by her mother, Rosalia Mera.
