Bill Belichick is not only a legendary Super Bowl-winning coach, but also a father to three children: daughter Amanda and sons Steve and Brian, whom he shares with his ex-wife, Debby Clarke Belichick. After stepping down from his 24-year tenure as head coach of the New England Patriots, Bill was named head football coach at the University of North Carolina in December 2024. In his announcement, he expressed a long-held desire to coach in college, saying, “I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill.” While Bill’s own father advised against a coaching career, he has always encouraged his children to follow their passions. “Do what you want to do, live out your dreams,” he shared in a 2017 Patriots media session. His kids, all coaches in their own right, have followed their father’s advice, forging careers in sports on their terms.

Here’s everything to know about Bill Belichick’s kids.

Steve Belichick

Stephen “Steve” Belichick is Bill Belichick’s older son and second child, born in March 1987, just two months after his father’s first Super Bowl win as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. Steve attended Rutgers University, where he played lacrosse for four years. According to his biography on the Patriots’ website, Steve also walked on to the Rutgers football team as a long snapper, with the goal of preparing for a coaching career.

Steve joined the New England Patriots coaching staff in 2012 as a coaching assistant, and by 2016, he was promoted to safeties coach. In 2020, he shifted to coaching the outside linebackers. Bill reflected on their professional connection in 2016, telling NBC Sports, “It’s special to be able to come in every day and see him. There were certainly a lot of days I wasn’t there when they were at school, so it’s great to be able to see him every day.”

Brian Belichick

Brian Belichick is the youngest of Bill’s three children. He graduated from Trinity College in 2016, where he studied anthropology and played lacrosse for the Bantams, according to his Patriots biography. That same year, Brian joined the Patriots as a scouting assistant and was promoted to coaching assistant in 2017, where he joined his older brother Steve on the coaching staff.

In a 2018 interview with The Providence Journal, Steve shared his thoughts on working alongside Brian. “It’s definitely been different,” Steve said. “It’s good to have him on the defensive staff and work with him every day.” He added that while they had spent time together before, being able to teach Brian more “relevant things” in coaching had been rewarding. Steve also praised his brother’s intellect, calling him “really smart” and an “analytical thinker.”
