Billie Joe Armstrong may be known as a rocker in the public eye, but at home, he’s a father to two sons, Joey and Jakob Armstrong. The Green Day frontman was 22 when he married Adrienne Armstrong in July 1994. Just one day later, they discovered that Adrienne was pregnant. Their first son, Joey, was born the following year, and Jakob joined the family in 1998. Reflecting on his early days as a parent, Billie told in 2024, “As a young parent, you always want to have the right answer or solution, but that’s tough. Then, as they grow, they develop their own wisdom and share it with you. It comes full circle. It’s like a friendship, but with a much deeper bond, which I’m proud to share with my sons.
Billie and Adrienne welcomed Joey on Feb. 28, 1995. The couple found out they were expecting the day after they got married. Speaking to Rolling Stone in 1995, Billie recalled how Adrienne mentioned she’d been “feeling weird,” prompting them to get a pregnancy test. “We were both too nervous to check, so I finally went to look. Sure enough, we had the big purple line. I walked out and said, ‘Hi, Mom.’ It was a surreal moment. I asked if she was happy, and she said, ‘Yeah, totally, are you?’ I said, ‘Yeah, totally.’ It was such a high—getting married and then learning she was pregnant the very next day.
Their second son, Jakob, was born on Sept. 12, 1998. Known affectionately as “Boo” on his mom’s Instagram, Jakob followed in his father’s footsteps and became a musician. Reflecting on his upbringing, surrounded by rock stars, he told Total Guitar, “Looking back, it’s clear that being around music influenced me to play guitar and start a band.” Jakob admitted he didn’t realize music was his calling until his late teens. “I’d graduated high school and had been playing with my band for a while. I tried college, but after a year, I realized how much I missed music.” In 2015, Adrienne posted a picture of Jakob at his “first show” on Instagram. Later that year, his band, Jakob Danger, released their debut EP.
Billie Joe Armstrong recently opened up about his life away from the stage. In the latest issue of the 51-year-old punk icon shared that his wife Adrienne, 54, and their sons Joey and Jakob inspired several songs on Green Day’s upcoming 14th album, Saviors (out Friday, Jan. 19). One track, “Bobby Sox,” is an upbeat anthem that started as a song about him and his wife enjoying nights together binge-watching The Office. Armstrong and Adrienne’s love story began in Minneapolis when they met at a Green Day show, and after 29 years of marriage, they’re still going strong.
