Danny DeVito’s 3 Kids: Meet Lucy, Gracie, and Jake

by Kristine Bowman

Danny DeVito is known for his tough-guy roles and his equally tough voice, but to his three kids, he’s really just a big softie at heart. The Emmy-winning actor and his ex-wife, Rhea Perlman, welcomed their first child, Lucy, in 1983, a year after tying the knot. Although they separated in 2012, DeVito and Perlman first met in 1971, living together for 11 years before their marriage. They went on to have two more children: Grace in 1985 and Jake in 1987. Reflecting on his life, Danny shared with The Guardian, “I have been very fortunate in my life. I have had a lot of happiness. I have a great family and I work a lot, and that’s what I like to do.”

After separating in 2012, the couple briefly reconciled in 2013, only to separate again in 2017. Despite not officially divorcing, they have maintained a close relationship. “We’re still separated, but we see each other often, and we’re still a family,” Perlman said in an interview. “I’m really, really glad that Danny and I were able to navigate some rough days to have this different kind of relationship. I think it’s pretty rare, but we agree on so many things that it makes sense.

Lucy Chet DeVito, 42

Danny became a father for the first time on March 11, 1983, when he and Perlman welcomed their daughter, Lucy Chet DeVito. Growing up in Los Angeles, Lucy developed a passion for acting early on, later attending Brown University for theater. She went on to pursue a career in Hollywood, starting with small roles, including a cameo on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Lucy and her father even teamed up for the 2022 adult animated series Little Demon, where Danny voiced Satan and Lucy played his daughter, the anti-Christ. The show became a true family project with both Lucy and her younger brother, Jake, serving as executive producers.

Grace Fan DeVito, 40

Danny and Perlman’s second daughter, Grace “Gracie” Fan DeVito, was born on March 25, 1985. Unlike her famous parents and sister, Gracie prefers to keep a low profile but shares their creative spirit. She earned her MFA from CalArts in 2012 and has pursued a career as a performance artist and painter in Los Angeles. In an interview with Cultured, Gracie shared how her parents always encouraged her and her siblings to follow their own paths. “There was no pressure whatsoever. It was more like they were super excited about whatever we were doing,” she said, adding that her parents included them in their creative work while allowing them the freedom to forge their own identities.

Jacob Daniel DeVito, 37

Danny and Perlman’s youngest child, Jacob “Jake” Daniel DeVito, was born on October 10, 1987. Like his dad, Jake is involved in the entertainment industry but works behind the scenes as a producer and director. He spoke about his childhood to The Associated Press, recalling how exciting it was to be on set with his parents and meet interesting. “They were really good about keeping our home really solid and safe,” Jake said. He has also worked closely with his father, serving as an executive producer for Little Demon alongside Lucy and working on the short film Curmudgeons. “We’ve always stayed really close,” he said about his relationship with Danny, adding that their bond has always been warm and strong.

Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito's Marriage: A Legacy of Love and Challenges

Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito have been through a lot together over their 50+ years together. They first met in 1971, began dating, and married on January 28, 1982. Over the course of their relationship, they’ve had three children and supported each other’s careers, often sharing the screen in projects like Taxi and Matilda. Despite their professional and personal success, they have also faced their share of challenges. After 30 years of marriage, the couple announced their separation in 2012 but reconciled in 2013, only to separate again in 2017. However, they remain married and continue to prioritize their family. “We are still very good friends, and we see each other a lot. And our family is still the most important thing to both of us,” Perlman said in an interview on Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Wiser Than Me podcast in June 2023.
