John ritter’s legacy lives on through his children. The emmy and golden globe-winning actor passed away suddenly on sept. 11, 2003, at 54, due to an aortic dissection. Beyond his iconic contributions to comedy, ritter was a devoted father to four children: jason, 44, carly, 42, and tyler, 40, with his first wife, nancy morgan (married 1977–1996), and noah, 26, with his second wife, amy yasbeck, whom he was with until his passing.

Now adults, many of ritter’s children have followed in his footsteps, carving their own paths in entertainment. Over the years, they have spoken about the profound impact of losing their father and the lasting influence he had on them. “when someone in your family is a force of nature, the focus of the room, it’s bizarre when they’re gone,” jason shared on melissa rivers’ group text podcast. “there’s a black hole of energy … Your family becomes something different, and it’s hard to comprehend that a life like that is over.

Jason Ritter, 44

Ritter’s eldest son, jason, was born on feb. 17, 1980, in los angeles. His acting career started early, landing his first role in an animated christmas special at six—thanks to his dad. “this was a full-on nepotism hire,” he joked on the jess cagle show in 2023. “he definitely got me the job.”

After graduating from nyu, jason pursued acting full-time, landing his first major role in freddy vs. Jason (2003). Just a month before his passing, ritter proudly shared that his son was working on a horror movie, quipping, “god help him.” jason later recalled his father’s advice: “be yourself and try not to be nervous.

Carly Ritter, 42

Born march 1, 1982, carly is ritter and morgan’s only daughter. Instead of acting, she pursued music, following in the footsteps of her grandfather, country music hall of famer tex ritter.

Though she grew up in a showbiz family, carly didn’t connect with country music until later in life. “my dad hadn’t played much country for us growing up,” she told kcet in 2013. “when he discovered rock and roll, he never looked back.”

In 2013, she released her self-titled debut album through vanguard records. Though she hasn’t released another since, she continues to write and sing. In 2021, she shared a new song, they don’t work here anymore (ballad of a bygone climate), on youtube.

Tyler Ritter, 40

Ritter’s third child, tyler, was born on jan. 31, 1985. Like his father, he pursued acting, landing roles in arrow, the mccarthys, ncis, and young & hungry.

Tyler has been open about his father’s influence on his career. “he didn’t get to see much of my acting, but I feel his presence,” he told entertainment tonight in 2014. “he really showed us how much joy you can have at work. He paved the way for us, and here I am.”

Noah Lee Ritter, 26

Ritter’s youngest son, noah, was born on sept. 11, 1998, with yasbeck. Tragically, ritter passed away on noah’s fifth birthday, during his first week of preschool.

Unlike his older siblings, noah keeps a low profile. His social media accounts are private, and his twitter bio reads: “I don’t use social media much … A private guy … Rarely accept follow requests. Have a nice day.”

In may 2022, he made a rare public appearance with his family at an evening from the heart in l.A., supporting the john ritter foundation for aortic health.
