Lorne Michaels may be best known as the mastermind behind Saturday Night Live, but at home, he’s a dedicated father of three. The television mogul has been married to his third wife, Alice Barry, since 1991, and together they share three children: Henry, 32, Eddie, 29, and Sophie, 26. The couple welcomed their first son, Henry, a year after their wedding, followed by their second son, Eddie, two years later, and completed their family in 1998 with the birth of their daughter, Sophie.
Despite being the enigmatic figure running SNL for nearly five decades, Lorne rarely speaks about his personal life. In fact, his commitment to his “life’s work” is so deep that, according to a New York Times profile, he’s never missed a single Saturday night, even making it to a table read right after one of his children was born. However, in a rare moment of openness during a 2011 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lorne shared how he’s learned to balance work and family. “I’m at a stage in life where I know what’s important,” he said. “The nocturnal thing has been hard for my kids, realizing their father isn’t like other fathers, but they’re okay with it.” In 2004, when Lorne was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, he took a moment to express his gratitude to the “best” in his life: his family.
Lorne and his wife, Alice, welcomed their first child, Henry Abraham Michaels, in April 1992. Named after his paternal grandfather, Henry Abraham Lipowitz, who passed away when Lorne was just a teenager, Henry’s name carries special significance. “Losing my father at 14 was like an earthquake,” Lorne revealed in an interview with American Masters on PBS.
Henry grew up in New York with his parents and two younger siblings. He attended Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts and later graduated from Dartmouth College. Showing an early interest in entertainment, Henry had a small role in the 2007 movie Hot Rod and attended the film’s Los Angeles premiere with his father and sister, Sophie.
Born in November 1994, Lorne and Alice’s second son, Edward, known as Eddie, shares a meaningful middle name. “Lipowitz” was Lorne’s original surname before he changed it to Michaels when he began his career in Hollywood. Eddie, like his brother, attended Deerfield Academy and later graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2017 with a degree in English Literature.
After graduating, Eddie moved to Los Angeles and joined his father’s company, Broadway Video, as a creative executive. Though he’s largely kept out of the spotlight, Eddie has made occasional red carpet appearances with his family.
Lorne and Alice’s youngest child, Sophie, was born in January 1998. Growing up in New York, Sophie attended Deerfield Academy like her brothers, but she also had a passion for equestrian sports. Competing at both national and international levels, Sophie shared with The Deerfield Scroll that she had been riding since she was just four years old. “I love horseback riding because it pushes me to constantly improve and set new goals,” she said, adding that the relationship between horse and rider is key to success.
Sophie went on to attend Yale University, where she earned her degree in American Studies in 2020. While at Yale, she was involved with the Yale Daily News and hosted episodes of the student-run broadcast.
Lorne Michaels has been married to Alice Barry since 1991, and she has been by his side throughout his long tenure at Saturday Night Live. Though Lorne rarely discusses his personal life, he has occasionally shared insights about their relationship. Alice will also be by his side as Lorne contemplates retirement, which could happen after SNL’s 50th season in 2024.
