Lynda Carter is every bit the Wonder Woman to her two children, James and Jessica, as she is to her countless fans around the world. The actress, renowned for her iconic portrayal of DC’s Diana Prince, a.k.a. Wonder Woman, first embraced motherhood in 1988 when she welcomed her son. She completed her family in 1990 with the birth of her daughter. Both children were born to Carter and her longtime husband, Robert A. Altman, whom she married in 1984. Despite her rising career, the couple chose to leave the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles for the quieter suburbs of Washington, D.C. Reflecting on that time, Carter told in 2017, “I spent a lot of time on movie sets… but I didn’t have a lot of substance in my life.” It was her family that brought her the fulfillment she had been searching for. “It’s always the in your life — the friends and family that you choose to spend time with,” she said. “The harder step is raising your children. I think the intellectual pursuits in our family were much more the focus of our lives,” she added. “It was never about material things or presents; it was the accomplishments and the sense of pride in each other’s successes.

James Altman, 36

Lynda and Robert became parents for the first time on January 14, 1988, with the birth of their son, James Altman. Despite Carter’s fame and Altman’s success in law and video games, the couple made an effort to provide James with a relatively normal upbringing just outside of Washington, D.C. James went on to attend the University of Michigan, earning a B.A. in History in 2010, followed by a Juris Doctor degree from George Washington University Law School in 2014. Like his father, James pursued a career in law, eventually joining ZeniMax Media, the company Robert founded, which is the parent company of Bethesda Softworks. He currently holds the position of Director of Publishing Operations at Bethesda Softworks. In March 2021, when Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media in a historic deal, James paid tribute to his late father on social media, marking the significant moment.

Jessica Carter Altman, 34

On October 7, 1990, Lynda and Robert welcomed their daughter, Jessica Carter Altman. Like her father and brother, Jessica pursued a law degree, graduating in 2017 with a Juris Doctor. “Another Juris Doctor in the family 💙💛,” she proudly shared on Instagram, posting a family photo at her graduation from the University of Michigan. However, Jessica’s true passion lay in music. “I grew up performing,” she shared in a February 2024 interview with The Morning Wrap. “When I was in law school, my mom invited me to perform with her at the Kennedy Center in D.C. That’s when I knew — after law school, I was going to be a musician. It was just a matter of time.” In June 2024, Jessica released her debut album, AFTERMATH. “Every song is deeply personal,” she posted on Instagram. “Thank you to my incredible team for making this possible. I hope everyone enjoys the pieces of my heart that went into this album ❤️.” Jessica frequently performs alongside her mother. In 2017, she shared her excitement about returning to the stage with Carter, and while they had planned a tour together in 2020, the pandemic forced them to cancel.

Lynda Carter on the Loss of Her Husband of 37 Years

When Lynda Carter first brought Wonder Woman to life in the 1970s, there was a challenge in figuring out how Diana Prince would transform into the Amazonian superhero. “They couldn’t use a phone booth like Superman,” Carter explained in an interview. “They wanted to use a lazy Susan, which I thought was absurd. So, I suggested a dancer’s pirouette. That’s how Wonder Woman’s iconic spin was born.” Now, nearly 50 years later, Carter is navigating a new transformation following the loss of her husband, Robert Altman, in February to myelofibrosis, a rare blood cancer. Reflecting on this profound loss, the 70-year-old actress admits, “The next part of my life is about learning who I am. It’s terrifying. I don’t know who I am without Robert.
