Melanie “Mel B” Brown may be best known as one of the members of the legendary ’90s girl group, the Spice Girls, but at home, she’s the leader of her own girl band. The singer, who gained fame as Scary Spice, is the proud mom of three daughters. She welcomed Phoenix in 1999 with dancer Jimmy Gulzar, followed by Angel in 2007, born shortly after her relationship with Eddie Murphy. Four years later, Madison came along, born during her marriage to Stephen Belafonte. Balancing family life with a high-profile career hasn’t always been easy. “You learn something every day when you’re a mom — especially a working mom,” Mel told in 2017.

“You’re always trying to balance work, school runs, dinners, and making sure there’s home-cooked food.” The former America’s Got Talent judge shared that while her three daughters are very different in personality, she’s raised them with the same core values. “All you can give them is love, affection, and attention, and they’ll find their own way,” she said. “I hope I’m raising three confident, strong women who are respectful, supportive, and appreciative of other women.

Phoenix Brown, 25

Born on February 19, 1999, Phoenix is Mel’s eldest daughter with Jimmy Gulzar. She has a deep admiration for her mom’s pop star history and even recreated some of Mel’s iconic Scary Spice looks in December 2022. Phoenix wowed Instagram with a photoshoot that paid tribute to three of her mom’s most memorable outfits. Mel joked about the tribute during a 2024 interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, saying she was “so pissed” and “annoyed” that Phoenix borrowed her clothes. “I saw the pictures and thought, ‘That looks a bit like me,’” Mel shared with a laugh.

Angel Iris Murphy Brown, 17

Mel and Eddie Murphy welcomed their daughter, Angel Iris, on April 3, 2007. In an interview with OK! magazine shortly after Angel’s birth, Mel revealed that Angel arrived nine days early, and she drove herself to the hospital while in labor. “I didn’t want to be dramatic and call an ambulance,” she joked. Mel also explained the significance of Angel’s name. “She’s my angel, my little blessing during pregnancy,” Mel shared. “Iris is after my grandmother.” Interestingly, Mel admitted she almost called Angel “Phoenix” because she saw so many similarities between her two daughters as babies.

Madison Brown Belafonte, 13

Madison, Mel’s youngest daughter with Stephen Belafonte, was born on September 1, 2011. According to Mel, Madison is the “snuggler” of the family. “Madison is always by my side,” Mel revealed in a 2017 interview. “She’ll meditate with me, play with crystals, and she’s just so sweet.” Despite their close bond, Madison doesn’t seem too familiar with her mom’s musical past. In July 2022, Mel hilariously shared on Instagram that Madison couldn’t recognize one of the Spice Girls’ biggest hits, “Who Do You Think You Are,” when Mel read the lyrics to her.

Mel B’s New Chapter: Marrying Rory McPhee After Swearing Off Marriage

Melanie “Mel B” Brown is preparing to walk down the aisle again. At 48, she’s found happiness with her fiancé, Rory McPhee, and is now planning a wedding she never thought she’d have. “I used to say, ‘I’m never getting married again. Never, never, never,’” Mel told. “I thought I was fine being single, focused on my kids and work.” But life had other plans. Mel and Rory, a hairstylist, have been family friends for years — he’s actually her cousin’s best friend. Reflecting on their early interactions, Mel recalled, “I just thought, ‘Oh, boys will be boys.’ He was just a family friend, nothing more.” Now, the two are ready for their happily ever after.
