Shakira might be a global music icon, but at home, her sons, milan, 12, and sasha, 9, are the real stars. she shares milan and sasha with her ex-partner, gerard piqué, who retired from professional soccer in november 2022. shakira has often said that parenting is her toughest gig yet. “it’s one of the most difficult things i’ve done in my life,” she admitted back in 2015. “i’ve performed on challenging stages in front of demanding audiences and met world leaders who can make you nervous, but nothing has made me as self-conscious as being a mom. every day, i question if i’m doing the right thing. i just want to keep improving at the hardest job on earth.
Shakira and piqué welcomed their first son, milan, on jan. 22, 2013. announcing his arrival on her website, the couple wrote, “we are happy to announce the birth of milan piqué mebarak, son of shakira mebarak and gerard piqué, born jan. 22nd at 9:36 p.m. in barcelona, spain.” they also explained the meaning behind his name: “milan (pronounced MEE-lahn) means dear, loving, and gracious in slavic; eager and laborious in ancient roman; and unification in sanskrit.” like his father, baby milan became a member of fc barcelona shortly after birth.
In early 2013, milan made his first visit to “the voice” set, where host carson daly and coaches adam levine and blake shelton greeted him. an audience member noted how shakira doted on her son, only handing him off when his cries became audible to the crowd.
By december 2021, it was clear milan had inherited his parents’ talents and drive. shakira shared a video of him playing piano alongside a violinist, writing, “this virtual concert is milan’s small homage to our dear bela, who taught us parents and children the value of love, respect, and devotion to work, and how to make our kids feel that what they do is the most important thing in our world.” milan has also joined shakira in the studio, blending family time with her professional life.
Shakira and piqué’s second son, sasha, arrived on jan. 29, 2015, also in barcelona. following his birth, the proud parents explained his name’s origins in a message on shakira’s website: “the name sasha is of greek and russian descent and means ‘defender of mankind’ and ‘warrior.’” shakira even shared a sweet photo of sasha’s feet from the hospital, joking, “i have daddy’s feet. it looks like i’ve been playing football my whole life.”
In june 2021, shakira posted a photo of sasha taking his first surfing lesson, dressed in a wetsuit and posing with his instructors. the following summer, she shared more pictures of her sons surfing at wavegarden in sao paulo, brazil. sasha’s athleticism isn’t limited to surfing. in 2017, shakira posted a video of 2-year-old sasha playing tennis, shooting hoops, and sliding down a playground slide, captioning it, “my little athlete!” a year later, she shared another clip of him practicing tennis with piqué. it seems sasha’s soccer roots run deep—he started kicking soccer balls at just 6 months old.
Shakira and piqué called it quits in a joint statement on june 4, 2022: “we regret to confirm that we are separating,” they said, requesting privacy for their children, their “maximum priority.”
The two first crossed paths in 2010 while filming the music video for “waka waka (this time for africa),” the official anthem of the 2010 fifa world cup. piqué, an fc barcelona defender, was one of several footballers featured in the video and caught shakira’s attention. “i wasn’t a soccer fan, so i didn’t know who he was,” she told 60 minutes in 2020. “when i saw the video, i thought, ‘hmm, that one’s kind of cute.’ then someone introduced us.” the rest, as they say, is history.
