Former athletes Shawn Johnson and Andrew East are proud parents to three children: Drew Hazel, Jett James, and Barrett Madison. Their love story began when the Olympic gold medalist retired from gymnastics in 2012 and soon met Andrew, a former NFL player. The two married in Tennessee in 2016. In 2017, they endured a heartbreaking miscarriage just days after discovering Shawn was pregnant, sharing their emotional journey with fans through a YouTube video. “The past 48 hours have been some of the happiest, scariest, and saddest times of my life,” Shawn wrote in the video description. She added, “I have been crying more than I ever have but am still optimistic for what is next.”
In 2019, they welcomed their first child, daughter Drew Hazel, followed by their son, Jett James, in 2021. Drew Hazel East, 5
Shawn and Andrew announced their first pregnancy in April 2019 with a joyful YouTube video. “@theeastbaby … we cannot WAIT to welcome you to the world and shower you with love. @andrewdeast WE DID IT!” Shawn captioned a photo on Instagram. Drew Hazel was born on Oct. 29, 2019, weighing 8 lbs., 8 oz., and measuring 20.5 inches. Shawn shared that Drew’s name was a tribute to her dad, captioning an Instagram photo, “Named after the most incredible person I know … her daddy.”
Over the years, the couple has shared Drew’s sweet milestones, from meeting her hero, Blippi, to taking on the role of a big sister. Known as “Roo,” she’s “definitely daddy’s girl through and through,” Shawn noted on Instagram. A special moment came in 2022 when Shawn introduced her to her former coach, Liang Chow, and Drew showed a keen interest in gymnastics. “She was just running, zig-zagging all over the gym,” Shawn said in a YouTube video, adding, “She was like, ‘Mama, beam.’ ‘Mama, bars.’ ‘Mama, trampoline.’ ‘Mama, vault.’”
Jett James East, 2
In January 2021, Shawn and Andrew announced baby number two with a simple Instagram caption: “Here we go again.” They welcomed Jett James on July 19, 2021. “We are so happy to welcome our little man into the world,” they shared in an exclusive PEOPLE statement. A few days later, they revealed more about Jett on YouTube: he measured 21 inches and weighed 9 lbs., 13 oz. His name, Jett James, honors both Shawn’s great-great-great-grandmother and Andrew’s brother.
Today, Jett is known for his boundless energy. In October 2023, Andrew posted a video of Jett escaping from his pack-and-play in the middle of the night, joking, “He wasn’t even 2 when he did this. all hands on deck w this guy.” Jett and Drew have also started to “babyproof” together, as seen in a video of the duo working on safety locks. “Plz help,” Andrew captioned the video.
Barrett Madison East
During a family trip to Greece in July 2023, Shawn shared her pregnancy announcement with bump photos on Instagram. Drew and Jett eagerly awaited their new sibling. “Drew is very, very excited,” Shawn told PEOPLE. Their third child, Barrett Madison, was born in December 2023. “The third time around feels so surreal,” Shawn wrote in her FamilyMade newsletter, describing the nervousness and joy of welcoming another baby. For Andrew, the timing was particularly meaningful, as his father was born on December 9 and had passed away the previous year. “Having our baby born so close to my dad’s birthday feels really special,” he shared.
Initially, they kept Barrett’s name and sex private, announcing the details along with new family photos. Shawn shared on Instagram, “Barrett ‘Bear’ Madison East. We’ve all been waiting for you.”
