Steve Kerr's 3 Kids: Meet Nick, Madeleine, and Matthew

Steve Kerr balances life as the coach of the Golden State Warriors and as a devoted father to three children: sons Nick and Matthew, and daughter Madeleine. He and his wife, Margot Kerr, who he met in college, tied the knot during his tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers and soon started their family, beginning with Nick, then Madeleine, and finally Matthew. This close-knit family of five makes time for each other despite their hectic schedules. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they cherished the opportunity to live together again. Steve described this period as “total chaos” on the Runnin’ Plays podcast in 2020, but he was grateful for the rare family time. Margot echoed this sentiment in a 2021 interview with In My Court, expressing amazement at how wonderfully their children turned out: “We somehow hit the lottery with our kids,” she remarked.

Nick Kerr

Nick, born in 1992, experienced the nomadic NBA lifestyle early as the family moved from Ohio to Florida and then to Chicago within his first year. Growing up around basketball profoundly influenced him; he recalls being allowed on the court during one of his father’s games. Steve notes that basketball has been a bonding element for them, remembering Nick on his shoulders during the 1996 championship celebration. Nick’s passion for basketball mirrors his father’s.

Madeleine "Maddy" Kerr Hyde

Born in 1995, Madeleine grew up in Chicago and moved to California for college at the University of California, Berkeley in 2013. That year, Steve became the coach of the Golden State Warriors, bringing the family closer to her. Madeleine, like the men in her family, was deeply involved in sports, serving as a volleyball team captain in college. She has tried to adopt her father’s leadership style, though she admits to being more outspoken, a trait she attributes to her mother, Margot.

Matthew Kerr

Matthew, the youngest, born in 1998, took a different path from his athletic family members, showing a stronger inclination towards the arts. He played soccer briefly at four years old but was more drawn to creative endeavors. Madeleine describes him as the non-athlete of the family, much like their father was an outlier in his. Matthew pursued screenwriting and comedy TV writing at USC, contributing to works like “Onward,” “Clone High,” and “Ted Lasso.” His connection with Jason Sudeikis, which began at a basketball game, led to a job on “Ted Lasso” after his graduation in 2020.
